What You'll Learn

Students will gain the knowledge and skills to work in a 2D drawing environment. You will have the opportunity to:

Develop a basic understanding of 2D drawing principles.
Create complex drawings, including annotations and multiple-view layouts.
Manage CAD drawing data and libraries in line with industry standards.
Use the latest version of AutoCAD to produce professional outputs.

On successful completion of this course, you will receive the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in 2D Computer Aided Design Software which is comparable to a Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)

Progression / Career

Graduates can work as CAD Technicians in various fields. These include interior design, construction, manufacturing, engineering, and architecture.

This award prepares you to work as a Junior Designer in studios that create 2D drawings and layouts. Earning this qualification gets you ready for entry-level jobs in companies needing document preparation or technical drawings.

It also provides the opportunity for further education and training within these areas.

Entry Requirements

Students must have a Leaving Certificate with a pass in technical drawing and mathematics. Alternatively, you should be able to demonstrate relevant industry experience or training.
Good IT skills are essential. This includes file management and using word-processing and spreadsheet applications.
Students should have strong spatial aptitude and form perception. Good numerical and literacy skills are important.
Previous experience in technical design or manual drafting is desirable
According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), non-native English speakers need a B2 level in writing, reading, listening, and speaking.

Who can apply for Donegal College courses?

Our courses are open to school leavers, lifelong learners, job seekers, employees, and employers looking to upskill or reskill.

How do I apply for a course?

You can make your applications for full-time and part-time courses online; you can start the process here on the Donegal College website. Click ‘APPLY‘ on the course of your choice; this redirects you to Fetchcourses.ie, where your application will be processed using the FETCH Courses website and system.

If you haven’t signed up for a FETCH account, you’ll be required to do so first; this is a one-time setup.

Are the Donegal College courses accredited?

Yes. Many of our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), typically Levels 4–6, as well as awards from ILM, City & Guilds, and other industry-recognised bodies.

Where do the courses take place?

Courses are delivered across Donegal at one of our 19 Donegal College campuses, certain courses are delivered in community venues in your local area, various courses are delivered online or through blended learning, and training can be offered on-site at your business, depending on the course.

Can I apply for an Apprenticeship?
