What You'll Learn
You will have the opportunity to:
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of hairdressing theory and practice.
- Apply a range of specialised techniques, ensuring client-centred services in a professional setting.
- Assess hair types effectively, recommending suitable styles, colouring, and perming while adhering to safety, health, and industry standards.
- Exercise professional judgement, delivering hairdressing services based on best practice.
Work based learning is a core part of this course, it includes 10 weeks work experience in a hairdressing salon.
On successful completion of this course students will achieve a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Women’s and Men’s Hairdressing, which is comparable to a Level 4 qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)

Progression / Career
- Graduates of this course can progress directly to employment in the hairdressing industry, qualified for roles such as junior hair stylists or salon assistants, assisting for events and within the creative industries.
- There are global opportunities on cruise liners and within the tourism industry.
- With experience and additional training, graduates can advance to stylist/senior stylist, colour technician, salon manager, freelance hairdresser/salon owner/mobile hairdresser.
- Graduates who wish to expand their expertise can explore advanced hairdressing courses to refine their technical skills, business and management training for those aiming to open their own salon.
Entry Requirements
- Students need to have level 3 skills and knowledge from the National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) to succeed in this course. You can show this through relevant life and work experience as no formal qualifications are required for entry to this course.
- Students must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to gain the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
- According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), non-native English speakers need a B2 level in writing, reading, listening, and speaking.

For young people who don’t know what they want to do after school, if they are good with their hands and if you are interested in doing hair and makeup it’s a great way to go. You cover so much that when you go out into the hairdressing world you are prepared for everything they throw at you. Nine months is a perfect amount of time because you don’t want to be in college too long. You want to experience a salon and bring your knowledge into places you are working. Catherine and Donna were so helpful and understanding. I have a lot of respect for those ladies. They pushed me forward so much that I am in Peter Marks now.

Who can apply for Donegal College courses?
Our courses are open to school leavers, lifelong learners, job seekers, employees, and employers looking to upskill or reskill.
How do I apply for a course?
You can make your applications for full-time and part-time courses online; you can start the process here on the Donegal College website. Click ‘APPLY‘ on the course of your choice; this redirects you to Fetchcourses.ie, where your application will be processed using the FETCH Courses website and system.
If you haven’t signed up for a FETCH account, you’ll be required to do so first; this is a one-time setup.
Are the Donegal College courses accredited?
Yes. Many of our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), typically Levels 4–6, as well as awards from ILM, City & Guilds, and other industry-recognised bodies.
Where do the courses take place?
Courses are delivered across Donegal at one of our 19 Donegal College campuses, certain courses are delivered in community venues in your local area, various courses are delivered online or through blended learning, and training can be offered on-site at your business, depending on the course.
Can I apply for an Apprenticeship?
The first step is to secure a job with an approved apprentice employer. An Apprenticeship is a three-way contract of employment between you, your employer and SOLAS, with on-the-job and off-the-job training delivered in phases. Full details are available on: www.apprenticeship.ie
