What You'll Learn

You will gain the up‑to‑date knowledge and skills necessary for BER assessments. You will have the opportunity to learn how to:

Understand the key legislation and requirements that guide BER assessments.
Carry out tasks as a BER assessor using current systems and standards.
Apply the DEAP methodology confidently and accurately.
Record essential BER details from plans, specifications and on‑site surveys.
Assess fabric, ventilation, lighting and building services that impact energy performance.
Use DEAP software to produce BER certificates and high‑quality advisory reports.
Communicate results clearly and recommend effective energy‑performance improvements.
Identify practical solutions that help achieve compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations.

The aim of this course is to provide you with the knowledge, skill and competence to carry out Building Energy Rating (BER) assessments on dwellings in compliance with the current Occupational Standards for Building Energy Rating (BER) Assessor for Dwellings and corresponding requirements for Training Programmes leading to Building Energy Rating (BER) Assessment published by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

On successful completion of this course, you will receive the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) Level 6 Minor Component Award Certificate in Building Energy Rating Assessment (Dwellings)

This course is part of the GRASP project. GRASP is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB)

This course will consist of six full-days training, five of these are online and one is in the training providers premises in Dublin, more information on this will be provided to you during application process.

Dates: Tuesday 9th June and Wednesday 10th June, Tuesday 16th June and Wednesday 17th June, Tuesday 23rd of June (Practical on-site day) and Wednesday 24th June 2026.

Progression / Career

This qualification gives you a solid foundation for progressing into professional BER assessment, energy‑efficiency consultancy, and wider roles across Ireland’s growing retrofit and sustainable‑construction sector.

Completing this course positions you for career growth in the energy, construction and retrofit industries, supporting progression toward SEAI BER Assessor registration and specialised sustainability roles.

Entry Requirements

Students must have one of the following levels of qualification and/or experience:

• Route 1 – NFQ Level 6 Higher or Advanced Certificate in a construction related discipline, where the required fundamental skillsets were covered.
• Route 2 – Approved NFQ Major Award in a relevant construction-related discipline.
• Route 3 – a) Member of a listed professional organisation at a specific grade, gained through an experiential learning route.

• OR

• b) 2 years full time relevant work experience in a construction-related environment AND an accumulation of SEAI approved or accredited awards in a relevant construction-related discipline, where the listed fundamental skillsets were covered.

• An ability to work on own initiative.

• Fundamental skills: Domestic assessors need IT literacy and mathematics skills, particularly in geometry and trigonometry.

The fundamental construction skills include an ability to:

– Undertake a measured survey of a building,
– Record building characteristics,
– Organise the information collected, and
– Use the information to perform non-complex calculations.
• An ability to read and interpret building drawings and specifications.
• An awareness of the building regulation requirements for domestic construction.
• A basic knowledge of construction methods and technologies used in domestic buildings.
• An awareness of the professional roles and responsibilities when constructing and refurbishing domestic buildings.

The GRASP Project operates on a cross‑border basis and is open exclusively to participants residing within the designated counties in Northern Ireland and the border region of Ireland. To be eligible for recruitment to the programme, individuals must reside in one of the following approved counties:

• Derry / Londonderry
• Fermanagh
• Tyrone

Ireland (Border Counties)
• Cavan
• Donegal
• Monaghan
• Leitrim
• Sligo

Cost / Fees

Eligible applicants will have their course costs are subsidised in full under the GRASP Fund.

*PLEASE NOTE – This does not cover any subsequent application costs to the SEAI for accreditation to be an approved SEAI BER Accessor.

How do I apply for a course?

You can make your applications for full-time and part-time courses online; you can start the process here on the Donegal College website. Click ‘APPLY‘ on the course of your choice; this redirects you to Fetchcourses.ie, where your application will be processed using the FETCH Courses website and system.

If you haven’t signed up for a FETCH account, you’ll be required to do so first; this is a one-time setup.

Are the Donegal College courses accredited?

Yes. Many of our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), typically Levels 4–6, as well as awards from ILM, City & Guilds, and other industry-recognised bodies.

Where do the courses take place?

Courses are delivered across Donegal at one of our 19 Donegal College campuses, certain courses are delivered in community venues in your local area, various courses are delivered online or through blended learning, and training can be offered on-site at your business, depending on the course.

Can I apply for an Apprenticeship?
