What You'll Learn

This course is focused on teaching learners the fundamental skills and concepts of Python which one of the world’s most popular and versatile cross-platform programming languages.

Python’s popularity has grown vastly in over the last decade, because it is relatively easy to learn, is highly portable and uses streamlined code. Some of the world’s leading tech companies use Python for their websites’ back-end, including Google, Instagram, Spotify, Netflix, Uber and Dropbox.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Use Python data types and operators to perform basic operations and calculations.
Write Python code using decision-making and loops to control the flow of a program.
Handle user input and display output effectively using Python’s built-in functions.
Organise your code with clear structure and documentation for better readability and maintenance.
Identify and fix common coding errors using Python’s error handling tools.
Work with Python modules and tools to extend the functionality of your programs.

On successful completion of this course, you will receive an IT Specialist in Python (ITS-303) Certificate, an industry recognised qualification certified by Certiport.

Progression / Career

After completing this course, you will have a strong foundation in Python programming, giving you the foundation to move into more advanced areas such as web development, data analysis, machine learning, or software engineering. These skills are in high demand across industries including tech, finance, healthcare, and media.

You may choose to progress to specialised training or certifications in areas like data science, artificial intelligence, or full-stack development, opening up career opportunities as a Software Developer, Data Analyst, Machine Learning Engineer, or Web Developer.

Entry Requirements

No formal education/qualifications required, but we do recommend that students have a high level of computer literacy and an interest in coding and basic mathematics and algebra. An aptitude for logical thinking and problem solving would also be a distinct advantage.
Good verbal and written communication skills are desirable. A high level of computer literacy. Logical thinking, strong problem solving skills. Strong interest in coding/computer programming.
Experience in using web based learning systems is an advantage.
Please note: To actively participate in course activities, learners must have access to a computer with stable broadband internet access.

Who can apply for Donegal College courses?

Our courses are open to school leavers, lifelong learners, job seekers, employees, and employers looking to upskill or reskill.

How do I apply for a course?

You can make your applications for full-time and part-time courses online; you can start the process here on the Donegal College website. Click ‘APPLY‘ on the course of your choice; this redirects you to Fetchcourses.ie, where your application will be processed using the FETCH Courses website and system.

If you haven’t signed up for a FETCH account, you’ll be required to do so first; this is a one-time setup.

Are the Donegal College courses accredited?

Yes. Many of our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), typically Levels 4–6, as well as awards from ILM, City & Guilds, and other industry-recognised bodies.

Where do the courses take place?

Courses are delivered across Donegal at one of our 19 Donegal College campuses, certain courses are delivered in community venues in your local area, various courses are delivered online or through blended learning, and training can be offered on-site at your business, depending on the course.

Can I apply for an Apprenticeship?

The first step is to secure a job with an approved apprentice employer. An Apprenticeship is a three-way contract of employment between you, your employer and SOLAS, with on-the-job and off-the-job training delivered in phases. Full details are available on: www.apprenticeship.ie
